Petra is the Kingdom of Jordan’s most visited site, it is easily reached from Israel by crossing the border crossing in Eilat. Petra is a UNESCO site, an ancient city carved out of the sandstone cliffs, it dates back to approximately 312BC and was once the capital of the Nabaean civilization. The Nabaeans were a powerful civilization which controlled trade routes that ran through their city of Petra. They built palaces, tombs, temples and homes in the rock face of the rose colored mountains of Petra. Visitors to Petra enter through the Siq, a narrow gorge with high walls of rock on both sides. As you emerge from the Siq you are faced with one of the most impressive structures in Petra, the Treasury, a two story structure with Roman-style columns and a grand entrance.
